"I was roaring drunk and decidedly crazy by the time I arrived at Trader JJ's. Surrounded by Russian Hill on the north and Nob Hill on the east, JJ's was caught between the Chinese expansion on one side and the gay liberation on the other. The Chinks and the fags were constantly chipping away at our defense, but through the efforts of hard-core intelectuals, funky artists, tough-minded engineers, humble poets, unpublished writters, drunken lawyers and dropouts of all description, we had managed somehow to keep the joint free of all foreign ideology. Throughout the entire sixties -while under attack by missionaries from the Jehovah's Witnesses and undercover organizers from the Civil Rights movement- we fought hard against peddlers of anxiety, those hustlers with dandruff who'd come into the dive, order a pitcher of draft beer and start to recite their pledges of allegiance to matters that didn't concern us one bit."

Oscar Zeta Acosta - The autobiography of a brown buffalo
